Best-known for crafting jerky, shuffled beats, HeavyFeet producers Mike Burgess and James Medina have pooled their collective talents to become two of the Manchester underground scene’s fastest rising stars at 23 years old. Mike’s background as a classically trained musician, promoter and engineer found the DJ and production talent of James, who currently holds a residency at Manchester’s Tangled, the city’s longest running club night since 1993. When the two combined their production talents, their taste for the UK heavy house sound, pioneered by the likes of Switch, was already sweeping the underground electronic scene worldwide.

HeavyFeet’s bass-heavy sound blends U.S. and UK house with breaks, hip hop and garage. The result is a shuffled arrangement of distorted vocals, old-skool rave noises, new-school Chicago jack and plenty of wobbly undertones. When DJing, James has previously controlled the decks the solo, but there is now increased support from Mike, whilst in the studio, producing is a 50-50 effort. The duo is currently finishing new remixes for Fat! Records and U&A Recordings, which both attracted attention from Speaker Junk and Micky Slim’s Bomb Squad imprint. HeavyFeet has also lent recent supporting sets to Trevor Loveys and Micky Slim, with dates alongside Switch, MSTRKRFT and Boy 8-Bit forthcoming in the UK.

Aside from their detailed production work, HeavyFeet is continuing to collaborate with vocalists on several original projects. Chris Madin (Stonebridge), David Lewis (Streetz Recordings), Riz MC (BBC Electric Proms Winner) and Goldie’s tour MC, Switch MC are just a few names crooning their way into the mix of HeavyFeet’s distinct wobbly sound. Mike and James are currently expanding their DJ performance to include the both of them in a paired performance, incorporating laptop computer, MIDI controllers and FX units into the mix, with the now-standard twin CDJ set-up. HeavyFeet also looks to incorporate MCs and turntablists into a live DJ performance that balances out their fidget bass lines. Their future goals, at Potty Mouth Music and beyond, include the creation of a live show with vocalists and musicians, similar to the vein of Audio Bullys and Basement Jaxx.
