Jacques The Ripper

jacques

Jacques the Ripper is a native of Bordeaux, France and resides in Los Angeles. An electronic music lover that took the step from the dance floor to behind the decks and never looked back. A multi dimensional dj able to navigate from many genres and with a diverse music library. Influenced by a french disco mum and morocan salsa father Jacques grew up dancing too good beats from an early age. A resident dancer at many underground events all over the world specially in the west coast underground movement that led him to the infamous Burning Man Festival where the dirty house and break desert beats infected him for ever. Through good friends and some amazing house parties he naturally evolved as a house dj. After many house parties and underground music events Jacques has played at festivals like Burning Man, Bass Station, Fuente Eterno, Xara, Los Angeles Decompression festival, Venice Carnival with travel to France,Thailand, Mexico, Las Vegas and up and down the California coast. The intention is to always sculpt a set for the event, the crowd and the moment. He started the label Heargasm productions with three down tempo mixes and a tech house/minimal mix. Jacques is now producing events like the Kundalini Lounge and the recent NYE Shift Party in LA.

fitm

Friends. I’ve been getting a bunch of requests for this older mix from the Funky and the Middle party. Looking back it was an incredible time of music as you will surely hear when you check out this mix. I still can’t believe how fortunate we were to have the talent come through that we did. Incredible.

Bless,

Justin Paul

justinpaul

Justin Paul is in a sense the renaissance man of electronic music.
It’s not just that he’s an experienced DJ and producer or because of
his successful run as the founder and CEO of Philadelphia, PA based
Playloop Records. Rather, Justin Paul is revered more than most other
h2-blocker antacids nexium
electronic dance music entrepreneurs because he works feverishly to
create a vehicle where all electronic dance music genres can share one
roof. In years past, it would be considered uncouth to pair artists
ranging from techno, house, breaks, drum n’ bass and even dance rock
on the same label. However, diversity is at the heart of why Paul’s
Playloop Records has seen a meteoric rise in business since the
release of it’s critically acclaimed debut label compilation, 2007’s
“Get Into The Loop Vol. 1“

While it was just a small glimpse into exciting Playloop artists such
as Kezner and DJ Everyday, “Get Into The Loop Vol. 1″ was favorably
reviewed in several top dance music magazines including Remix, Big
Shot and DJ Times. Speaking of DJ Times, Justin Paul struck up a great
friendship with the magazine’s editor Jim Tremayne and was a guest
speaker / performer at the “DJ Times DJ Expo” in both 2007 and 2008.
Paul was also featured alongside King Britt as part of the DJ Times
sponsored “America’s Best DJ” contest and tour when it stopped in
Philadelphia during the summer 2007 campaign
Justin Paul and his band of Playloop artists have also found great
success with fans on the “jam band” and “Burning Man” circuits. A New
Year’s Eve 2008 performance in Philadelphia with the Disco Biscuits
and others drew critical praise for the Playloop crew. In fact,
Jambase writer Jake Krolick wrote “Playloop recording artists Justin
Paul, Kezner and DJ Everyday were easily equal to, if not better, than
all of Bassnectar’s hype.” In addition to DJing two consecutive years
at Burning Man, Justin Paul also hit the festival circuit with DJ
performances at SXSW and the 2008 installment of Camp Bisco. Justin
Paul held his own alongside the heavyweight talents of The Disco
Biscuits, Snoop Dog, MSTRKFT, Deadmau5 and DJ Shadow, among others.

Since it’s never good to be too far away from Philadelphia and it’s
rich musical heritage, Justin Paul pays extra special attention to his
adopted home. During the spring of 2007 Playloop began hosting it’s
own successful series of monthly parties in the City Of Brotherly
Love. This has provided the label with an opportunity to showcase both
it’s local heroes such as drum n bass king Ross D and overseas talent
including Germany’s Microstar. A September 2008 installment of the
event will see Playloop team up with Philly’s own singer/songwriting
sensation Natalie Walker for a genre defying evening. These monthly
party’s provide Playloop with a great space to take some risks and
introduce acts of the future. Enter THE MODEL.

With a desire to expand the Playloop repertoire Justin Paul made the
bold decision to sign local electronic rock act The Model and release
its debut CD “Physical” in the fall 2008. Already being compared to a
cross between U2, Nine Inch nails, INXS, Depeche Mode and The Killers,
“Physical” is a stunning debut release filled with numerous hits. A
companion remix EP with follow the release of “Physical” and it will
feature Playloop’s signature dancefloor interpretations of the
original tracks. A video for the first single, “I Won’t Be Hanging Out
Anymore,” will be directed by Justin Paul.

Jack Beats

the_glass

The brainchild of Beni G (Mixologists) and Plus One (Scratch Perverts), a production duo from London, UK who are not only veterans of the music scene but also multiple DJ champions, and award winning DJs. Jack Beats represents everything you love about the new wave of British house music. Wobbly basslines, big breakdowns and edgy accapella’s are cut, copied and pasted together to create a floor-filling brand of house that’s bound to rock the foundations of any club to its very core.
Citing influences as diverse as Timbaland, Rage Against the Machine, A Guy Called Gerald and Sebastian, the two began to hone a style fusing House, Hip Hop, Drum & Bass and Dubstep with Electro and Baltimore Club, and what emerged was a cutting edge sound. It blurred the lines between all these genres, as well as taking influence from old school hip hop, garage and rave, to current grime, bassline/figit house and dubstep. In essence they carved their sound as futuristic, hybrid, bass music for clubs without boundaries.

The British duo demanded immediate attention after their gob-smacking take on Boy 8-Bit’s anthem Fogbank dropped in early 2008. What followed were bass-heavy collaborations with Deekline and Wizard, refixes of Trip’s guitar-driven Who’s That?, the now classic AC Slater remix and the unforgettable transformation of Epic Last Song by Does It Offend You, Yeah? into a classic pop-dance tune. So much so, they quickly are becoming the in demand remixers of the moment, with everything they rework getting turned into a dancefloor hit.

Now the newest member of the Cheap Thrills camp (home also to head honcho Herve as well as Sinden, Detboi, Fake Blood, Machines Don’t Care) and a firm favourite for lovers of all things glitchy and fidgety, Jack Beats are set to release their widely anticipated original material at the end on 2008/early 2009.

Housewives

In the late 2006 La Fleur and Adeline Supreme teamed up to become the duo Housewives and to make the floor more dirty and wet than it’s ever been before. Their club “Housewives” has been very appreciated and has resided at Teatron, Trädgården, China Theatre and Berns in Stockholm, Sweden. This summer they will continue to host their club at the open air club Fredsgatan 12.

Trying to add a tea spoon of humour and creativity to the scene the nights at China Theatre were based on various themes and named thereafter, such as Kitchen Night and Laundry Room Night. The interior was designed in cooperation with art students and the intention was to invitie guests to the very own house of Housewives. Guests were invited for coffee parties, home made apple cake or even on delicate pink coctails such as Vanish.

The Housewives Club is twice award winning for “Best Club”, namely in People Choice Awards 2007 and now lastly in the prestigeous Scandinavian Music Convention 2008.

Housewives have given birth to their own genre named Mega House, a melodic and groovy, both minimal and maximal mix of house, techno and electro.

Housewives regularly host the electronic dance music show P3 Dans on the Swedish National Radio (equivalent to BBC’s Radio 1 in UK). Previous shows have included interviews with Ellen Allien, Busy P, Sebastian Ingrosso, Nôze, Style of Eye, Jake The Rapper, Johnjon and Nibc.

In early 2007 Housewives were the first ones to lay their hands on the Pacemaker and they have been ambassadeurs since then.

Housewives will continue hosting their own club during 2008 but will also make visits to other dance floors around Sweden and Europe, maybe closer to were you are, so watch out!

La Fleur

La Fleur is not easily put into a box. She’s the pharmacist turned DJ. The dancer turned dance maker. She’s maximal and minimal. Technically astounding and blessed with a unique presence and eclectic selection, she seduces any crowd into musical bliss. Not willing to niche herself, La Fleur charms the audience with tasteful minimal, only to follow it up with a ’wake up call’ of harsh electro and ruthless techno. She likes her music intense & melodious. Forget any myths about Swedes being chilled; this lady has an arsenal of musical weapons that can whip any dance floor into a state of arousal.

Having started back in 2003, La Fleur quickly became known around the Stockholm scene, landing residencies at all the major clubs, including: Grodan Cocktail Club, Berns and Teatron/Esque; as well as numerous international bookings in cities such as: Dubai, Barcelona, Jakarta, Athens, Marrakech, Berlin, Beirut, New York and St Petersburg. La Fleur was ranked as nr 6 in “Sweden’s top 100 DJ’s list” and was nominated in Scandinavian Music Convention (SMC) in the category “Best DJ” in 2008.

La Fleur is also one half of the dj-duo Housewives. Their club with the same name holds a residency at Berns 2:35:1 in Stockholm. Housewives was voted “Best Club” in People Choice Awards 2007 and “Best Club” in the Scandinavian Music Convention 2008. Together they also regularly host the P3 Dans show on Swedish national radio. Housewives were the first ever to lay their hands on the Pacemaker in early 2007 and have been ambassadors for it since then.

Success has lead La Fleur to focus fulltime on her DJ-profession. She moved from Stockholm to Berlin in the autumn of 2007 in order to devote more time to producing her own style of music. In December 2008 she had her first remix, of David Ekenbäck’s “Nairu”, made together with Dj Nibc, released on Trunkfunk Records.

In the making right now, is a new project. This fresh collaboration will present a different take on her artistry as well as her producing. Still La Fleur. But with an interesting twist. Be warned.

Rusko is on Fire

“Because of my mum’s band, there were always guitars and stringed instruments flying around the house when I was growing up; music was always all around me. I’ve still got a banjo at my flat, yeah I play a bit of banjo…then moved on to bass and saxophone, which I stuck to – those were the two instruments I focused on for my degree.

I studied music performance, rather than the technical side of production. I’ve never taken any classes in production. I never used to really go to my lectures at college; I used to always be in the studios using all the nice equipment. I was never really an electronic kind of person, although I am now, but I just come from playing real instruments and real music, that’s my background, really. I only started DJing to promote the music I was making – a lot of people are DJs and then they start producing; I was the other way around.”

“I used to do a lot of live producing – I’d record live instruments and putting electronic stuff in them, all sorts of things like that, from a very young age. I used to have a little drum machine when I was about 14. My mum used to go mad because I would always be on her computer – remember when your mum got her first computer and it was the most precious thing ever? It was like that. I was always on her computer once I figured out how to hook up my drum machine up and once I figured out a way to hook up my mum’s record player to it. That was the start, really.

So I’ve been producing for a long, long time – I’m the first one to say I’m not a DJ, I’m not DJ Rusko.” (laughs) “I’ve always been into electronic music, I just come from the other end. I come from dub, really. Dub is the one for me. The whole studio ethos behind dub, and making dub, is what got me into making electronic music.

If I’d grown up in London, I would’ve been into garage and all that kind of stuff – but growing up in Leeds, there isn’t any of that. It just doesn’t exist; you don’t even hear about it because there’s just so much dub and dub reggae. I miss it so much living in London now - in Leeds, most nights there’s some kind of dub soundsystem but down here there’s just not as much demand for it. I started off by making dub tunes and then Mark from Iration Steppaz started playing some of them. Iration have a shop up in Leeds, so I’d take my tunes, try them out on the system in their shop and they’d be like “do this…do that…do this…” So I’d come back with another one a few days later and talk to them about it. It was kinda like trial and error, being guided the way a little bit by those boys.

That was before dubstep was really dubstep; I was just making dub music, trying it out. I remember Digital Mystikz doing a set at Sub Dub and that was it. Dubstep was like what I was doing musically, but it was just a little bit more - made the beats a bit faster and harder…I was just dub, no step. It’s only within the two years that I’ve put a ‘step’ on the end. (laughs) I used to make hip hop and dub under the name Rusk, so I ran with Rusko for my dubstep productions.”

“I reckon we’re best when we play back to back (Caspa and Rusko). If I get booked to play a one hour set, I’ll end up playing exactly the same tunes as Caspa – we end up arguing who gets to play what! (laughs) We’ve got almost identical record bags. Plus we have a quick turnaround; all the artists on our label are knocking out tunes constantly. So your DJ box one month looks completely different the next; the turnaround of tunes is fast. That’s good, because people get bored of tunes so quickly, they’re hungry for it, they want to hear more, more, more, more…”

mr.caparro circa 1980

Folks it’s been a little while since I’ve posted a mix… My apologies for this. With the holiday season coming on strong and transition in the air, my dance card has been full. I will say this though, it has been an amazing year. Seems change is the only thing we can count on these days and I welcome it with open arms. And as we take one big step forward towards a new year, a new government and a new hope I truly believe 2009 is going to be remarkable beyond words.

So for the end of the year I bring you some holiday spirit to play, share and enjoy. If you like what you hear pass it on. And don’t forget to scroll down. There is a bountiful list of talented dj’s that have posted their music with me over the last few months. Check them out as they most certainly should be heard.

Happy Holidaze everyone.

dj saadhu

DJ Saadhu (aka Peter Ochs) has been spinning vinyl since he was a teenager in the mid-80s, dropping early hip hop back East at a high school radio station while trying to emulate the ground-breaking styles of Red Alert and Marley Marl coming out of New York City at that time.

Stints in college and alternative commercial radio as a disc jockey kept him connected to the music scene while working in the film business in Colorado.  But it wasn’t until heading west and discovering house, breaks and the California desert rave scene in the mid-90s that he was draw back to dance music.

When he moved to Los Angeles in 1999 to further his career as a filmmaker and freelance editor, he immersed himself in the LA underground music scene and Burning Man subculture.  It wasn’t long until he was back on the decks, rocking house parties and underground events,  now aiming his ambitions and talents directly to the dance floor.

Saadhu’s deft blending of jackin’ electro house and funky, dubby breaks into seamless sets keeps the club heads nodding and the party people dancing nonstop.  Hs love of the music is infectious and his broad music palette is revealed in his often-eclectic sets and mixes.   He is the driving force behind the Westside monthly Bass Ritual and has recently begun his foray into the producing fold, with plans to drop his first EP early next year.

heavyfeet

Best-known for crafting jerky, shuffled beats, HeavyFeet producers Mike Burgess and James Medina have pooled their collective talents to become two of the Manchester underground scene’s fastest rising stars at 23 years old. Mike’s background as a classically trained musician, promoter and engineer found the DJ and production talent of James, who currently holds a residency at Manchester’s Tangled, the city’s longest running club night since 1993. When the two combined their production talents, their taste for the UK heavy house sound, pioneered by the likes of Switch, was already sweeping the underground electronic scene worldwide.

clomid pcos and

cardiac pharmacologic norvasc

HeavyFeet’s bass-heavy sound blends U.S. and UK house with breaks, hip hop and garage. The result is a shuffled arrangement of distorted vocals, old-skool rave noises, new-school Chicago jack and plenty of wobbly undertones. When DJing, James has previously controlled the decks the solo, but there is now increased support from Mike, whilst in the studio, producing is a 50-50 effort. The duo is currently finishing new remixes for Fat! Records and U&A Recordings, which both attracted attention from Speaker Junk and Micky Slim’s Bomb Squad imprint. HeavyFeet has also lent recent supporting sets to Trevor Loveys and Micky Slim, with dates alongside Switch, MSTRKRFT and Boy 8-Bit forthcoming in the UK.

Aside from their detailed production work, HeavyFeet is continuing to collaborate with vocalists on several original projects. Chris Madin (Stonebridge), David Lewis (Streetz Recordings), Riz MC (BBC Electric Proms Winner) and Goldie’s tour MC, Switch MC are just a few names crooning their way into the mix of HeavyFeet’s distinct wobbly sound. Mike and James are currently expanding their DJ performance to include the both of them in a paired performance, incorporating laptop computer, MIDI controllers and FX units into the mix, with the now-standard twin CDJ set-up. HeavyFeet also looks to incorporate MCs and turntablists into a live DJ performance that balances out their fidget bass lines. Their future goals, at Potty Mouth Music and beyond, include the creation of a live show with vocalists and musicians, similar to the vein of Audio Bullys and Basement Jaxx.

foamo

sugar land breast augmentation

It’s not often that talent comes rising through the ranks fully formed, undiluted, and with as much potential as Foamo (aka Kye Gibbon). For a 21 year old from the sleepy town of High Wycombe, it’s quite an achievement to hit the ground running with his debut single ‘Moving It Over Here’ on Cubism Records, surprising established producers old enough to be his dad with the depth and quality of his engineering skills, never mind the absolutely huge bassline!

One of the next generation of dance music superstars (he was born in 1987, one year before the ‘summer of love’) Kye grew up predominantly listening to drum and bass, alongside a generous helping of dubstep, grime and garage, but it was listening to Loose Cannons’ radio show and seeing Kissy Sell Out DJ that introduced Foamo to a more house-orientated sound, and really focussed him towards producing the kind of bass heavy 4/4 tracks that you can hear on his increasingly popular Myspace site (www.myspace.com/foamo).

Having been inspired by Kissy, it made sense that he was one of the first DJs to send new tracks to, and it was Kissy who was the first DJ to really get behing Foamo’s tracks, playing ‘Moving It Over Here’ repeatedly on his Radio One show, giving him wide-ranging exposure to an international audience. Add to that a series of much sought-after online mix tapes and it’s no surprise that even after only one single he’s played across the UK and Europe as an in-demand DJ.

gout and coumadin

With unreleased mixes for Primary 1 and MSTRKRFT already under his belt, a new single for Wearhouse Records, collaborations with some of house music’s finest producers in the pipeline, plus sets at The End, Fabric and Space, Ibiza in his diary already, it’s been a meteoric rise for Foamo in 2008, and it looks like his reputation will only continue to grow.

wiseacre

born into the lovely environs of suburban lands lying to the east of los angeles, and raised on frozen food, meat and the religious right, eric tucker, aka WISEACRE, currently finds himself happily free yet equally inspired by it all.  living in the seaside republic of venice for 18 years, wiseacre initially established a successful career as a commercial/fine art photgrapher.

in 2003, he decided to pick up some vinyl, a couple of turntables, a mixer, two speakers and a few friends in order to begin the labor of love we call “throwin’ parties”.  since this time, WISEACRE has put his career of photography on hold and co-created two very successful los angeles parties, FUNKY IN THE MIDDLE and CUSTOM SUNDAZE.  He has hosted and played along side such talents as NICKODEMUS, MR. SCRUFF, QUANTIC, MARQUES WYATT, FORT KNOX FIVE, J BOOGIE,  MAKOSSA + MEGABLAST, KING BRITT,  OSUNLADE, MARK RAE, FEDERICO AUBELE, DJ DAY, SABO, THE PIMPS OF JOYTIME, DJ VADIM, MARK DE CLIVE LOWE, VIKTER DUPLAIX, DAZ-I-KUE, SAKE ONE, AFROKINETIC, DJ DRM and JEREMY SOLE.  Currently, WISEACRE is traveling between losangeles, new york, san francisco and washington D.C. spreading his love of music.

He is also looking to open a venue in los angeles where he will be able to continue his quest to bridge genres of music and people, and therefore build a scene that is not exclusive or segmented, but rather one that simply appreciates “good music”.  the tunes wiseacre chooses to share are deep and wide…. from brooklyn to the balkans, from south america to sweden, from house, to disco, to afro-latin funky breaks and dub… in short, wiseacre loves music, his lovely wife-to-be RAE and daughter ZOE.

5 lovely mixes for your listening pleasure. Damn this guy is busy…

dj kerry

DJ KERRY has been passionate about music since the tender age of 5. Her musical beginnings
began with her playing the piano at age 8 and listening to hard rock until she was introduced
to Michael Jackson at age 12. Once soulful music entered her life she expanded her musical
genres to everything from R&B, Disco, Electronica, Rap, House and everything in between.
Out of all the genres, house music and rare disco classics are her favorites to spin. Many of
her influences come from DJs such as Louie Vega, Marques Wyatt, Joe Claussell, DJ Harvey,
Greg Wilson and David Mancuso to name a few.

One thing that KERRY brings to her sets is the sense of universal appeal. Her song selections
are often not condensed to one type of sound but an accumulation of everything from
Brazilian jazz to Latin grooves to afro beats. Her sense of style is very smooth and seamless.
You can always count on DJ KERRY to make you groove.

For the past 3 years Kerry had been DJing all over Los Angeles and feels honored that she has
had the opportunity to open for such artists as Macy Gray, Quest Love of The Roots, Groove
Junkies, Morten Trust, DJ MeMe, & Scott K. In-between playing for different art shows,
galleries, and private parties, KERRY has played at trendy Los Angeles nightlife spots such as
Falcon Bar, Day After, Hollywood Canteen, Crash Mansion, Joseph’s Cafe’, The Standard
Hotel, Custom Hotel, Tokio Restaurant Bar & Lounge, & The Roosevelt Hotel to name a few.
You can currently find DJ KERRY playing at the AC Lounge every Wednesday in Santa Monica,
The Vine Bar every Thursday and the Standard Hotel in Hollywood on a monthly basis

lee mortimer

Lee Mortimer (AKA Sawtooth Sucka) has been steadily making waves with his productions and DJ sets by taking every opportunity to supply ears with exciting, sleaze-filled fidget house.

Having started with the humble Commodore Amiga before he was even a teenager, Lee has now firmly established himself as a top-notch recording artist and has had tracks and remixes on CR2, Front Room Recordings, Made To Play, Jusin Long’s .dotbleep Recordings, Chris Duckenfield’s Odori, Aquasky’s Passenger Records (Lee’s remix of ‘Call Me’ by The Bodysnatchers is in the Buzz Chart right now) and many more. Dave Taylor’s Dubsided Records have recently knocked on the door too and an EP is now in the pipeline.

No prizes for guessing then that love for Lee’s tracks has come from all corners of the dance music world. This includes support from Switch, Pete Tong (Who dubbed Lee’s track ‘Crazy’ as “one of the largest tunes” at the WMC 2007), Claude VonStroke (who licensed ‘Mush’ for his ‘At The Controls’ CD), Diplo, Dave Spoon, Crookers, Annie Mac, Jesse Rose, Paul Woolford, Micky Slim, Derrick Carter (featured ‘When It Comes’ on his Ministry of Sound Sessions CD) and loads more to boot!

Lee’s DJ-ing roots are in the underground, sweaty clubs, late nights, Stella Artois and Sambuca. This motto has followed him wherever he has played including as far a field and San Francisco (EndUp), Chicago (Smart Bar) and Lithuania, plus all of the UK’s top spots- Ministry Of Sound, Turnmills, 333, The Egg, Back To Basics, The Custard Factory etc. An Australian tour is also pencilled in for November.

Lee has been rewarded for his passion and hard work by being picked by Ministry of Sound to be their brand new monthly resident. Lee takes to the decks at the world renowned club on August 23rd 2008. Watch this space for more details.

Now concentrating his efforts into his own label, Wearhouse Music, Lee has come into his own with his production creativity and A&R skills with all tracks getting majorly caned!

If you wish to get in touch with Lee he can be reached at myspace.com/leemortimer
